LESSONS FROM THE 49TH IOC KOLKATTA

The Indian Orthodontic Society held it's annual meeting in November 2014. The annual get together is turning out to be a political jamboree wherein the election of the Office bearers takes precedence over all other activities. This is a carry over from the last conference at Ahmedabad, where all energies were concentrated on expulsion of members and election of office bearers.

The down slide was prominent by the large scale canvassing for the candidates and the near empty scientific lecture halls. In one particular incident, the speaker a well known author, clinician and practitioner from Mumbai did not even open his lap top for the presentation as there was no attendance in the hall. He just walked out.

The organizers had no scientific program to offer in the afternoons.

The highlight of the conference was the conferring of the OUT STANDING PROFESSOR AWARD on three Professors. The whole membership is still wondering about the purpose of the exercise. The question being asked is “WHAT IS THEIR CONTRIBUTION ?” and “HOW DOES IT EFFECT THE EXISTENCE OF THE MEMBER ?” “ WHY SHOULD WE ATTEND CONFERENCES IN THE FUTURE IF THEY ARE GOING TO BE USED FOR SUCH A STUPID EXERCISE?”

The Indian Orthodontic Society would never dare to ask the graduates of dental colleges in the country to vote for an Outstanding Professor of Orthodontics. This is because no one teaches the subject at the BDS level.

The awards night is being seen as a cover up for the failed administration which is unable to deliver anything tangible to the membership, which attends conferences with the hope that their existence as Orthodontists would be elevated and to cover up for very ordinary existence by the recipients.

Two of the recipients are Govt servants. That means they just existed in their jobs. Don't we all know how productive the Govt set up is ? One of the two has been the subject of a Govt inquiry and the other failed to get an extension even when all his predecessors had obtained one easily. Now if this is being Out Standing, God help with the last guy. The third is unable to explain the charges of plagiarism and tries to shamelessly influence the elections through a carefully cultivated vote bank which probably explain why he is such an out standing person.

Interestingly enough none has made any significant contribution to Orthodontics.

ACTIVITIES OF THE INDIAN ORTHODONTIC SUPERBRATS

With the confidence acquired from their dear teachers, the Superbrats of the Profession have been very active spewing venom on senior members of the profession. A what's up group “OUR LOVING GROUP “ has been actively pursuing their tirade against one of the senior most and finest members of the Orthodontic profession in India Dr Jayant Dehadrai. It is to the credit of the seniors of the group “OUR LOVING GROUP”, that has found the members in the middle of a police inquiry at Ahmedabad. Read on and be informed.

The group sounds like a sex racket. Let's hope they don't violate Article 377 in the process of their loving activity.

IOS SECRETARY SPENDS 3 HOURS IN POLICE STATION

The Hon Secretary of the IOS spent an agonizing 3 hours at the Navrangpura Police station on the 22nd November 2013 when he was in Ahmedabad to attend the 48th IOC. He was summoned to answer charges of defamation filed by Dr Jayant Dehadrai.

IOS SECRETARY DESTROY'S THE REPUTATION OF THE ORGANIZERS OF THE IOC AT AHMEDABAD

Dr A V Arun the Hon Secretary of the IOS exhibited his immaturity at the inauguration ceremony of the 48th IOC at Ahmedabad. He had just managed to come to the function after an agonizing 3 hours at the Navrangpura Police station in Ahmedabad. His immaturity showed up when he whimpered about his ordeal to the audience in front of the Chief guest and other dignitaries of Ahmedabad. Most senior members were not amused and verbally lashed at him for destroying the inauguration function and bringing disrepute to the Indian Orthodontic Society.

LESSONS FROM THE INDIAN ORTHODONTIC CONFERENCE IN AHMEDABAD

The Indian Orthodontic fraternity met at the western Indian Megapolis of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat in November 2013. This is also incidentally the home of Mahatma Gandhi the father of the Indian Nation and the city where he launched the movement to throw the British rulers out from India.

Question marks have been raised on the IOS (Davangere) as to it's role of representative of the Orthodontic Profession in India.

However, the lessons from the conference can be summarized thus

The teachers in the profession proved yet again their vice like grip on the profession and their ability to get anything done through their students. On their part the students proved that they were never taught to think effectively. The agony of Dr Jayade, regarding the falling teaching standards in the profession, were conveniently left unheeded. He was speaking after receiving the best teacher award at the conference.
The health of the profession was left unattended. The newcomers have still to continue begging for work with the general dentist. Next conference organizers should consider the Buddhist kamandal (carried for begging ) as a conference gift.
The policy makers had no time to discuss or suggest remedies for the plight of the new comer to the profession. The only bogey offered was the conduct of unauthorized courses.
The registered members were presented with a small traveling bag to carry instruments during their visiting practices. Much like the begging bowl of yore.
The success of the conference as usual was gauged by the number of foreign speakers. It did not matter that there was a fresh graduate from Ukraine who was listed as speaker, as long as he was white.
Dr Jayant Dehadrai who conducted the affairs of the Indian Orthodontic Society (Vellore) with excellence during 2002 to 2006 was the most discussed person in the conference. The Organization presently registered in Davangere tried to save face by expelling him to save the embarrassment of a honest audit in the conduct of the Professional body in India.
The IOS is contemplating going back to it's original registration at Vellore. The registration of the IOS at Davangere is proving to be a night mare . It was held to be a fraud by senior members such as Dr K K Chopra and Dr Jayant Dehadrai. Is it a sign of the diminishing influence of the Bapuji establishment in the affairs of the IOS?

TIPS & TRICKS FOR SUCCESS IN M.D.S EXAMINATION

Yes this was the topic of a widely circulated Post graduate course at a college in Bhopal on the 4th & 5th January 15, 2014.

The meet was addressed by Office bearers of the IOS (check categories of members). And of course, some senior sirs blessed the students with their not so straight tricks. What tricks were the participants taught to pass examinations? Is this how students are passing their examinations? Can the organizers and faculty face an inquiry on their conduct? What kind of a message is being given out to the students? Does the Organization have the strength to step down from the assumed high ground and subject itself to an audit of it's faculty and teaching programs? How long is the IOS going to accuse short courses for falling standards in Indian Orthodontics?

FRAUDULENT USE OF THE TRADE MARK

The application for a trade mark for the IOS was rejected as early as May 2013. The IOS continued to use the trade mark fraudulently. The IBO was the first to refuse the trade mark on it's banners during the IOC at Ahmedabad. This was followed by the organizers of the IOC. Illegal use of the trade mark is punishable by a jail term under the intellectual property act. Watch out for more action there. How come the HO of the IOS failed to convey the situation to the organizers at Ahmedabad as also the JIOS? They can always claim they were unaware of this development. So who was conducting the matter?

CONSUMER THE BEST JUDGE OF THE QUALITY OF INDIAN ORTHODONTICS

Dr Jayant Dehadrai has been in the forefront of service to the Orthodontic profession. Earlier, he conducted the first ever Orthodontic practice survey to evaluate the practice of Orthodontics as a speciality in India.

It is his belief that the standards of the professional service can be evaluated and raised only by a survey conducted for the benefit of the Orthodontic patient who is the beneficiary of the treatment.

At his behest, the www.indianorthodonticsociety.in the web site representative of the Indian Orthodontic economy is gearing up to launch a nation wide survey on the quality of Orthodontic treatment received by Orthodontic patients in the country. The outcome will help decide the policy for the coming years. It is also expected to expose the quality of Orthodontics delivered by practitioners throughout the country including degree holders and those trained through short courses.

SPEED IN TREATMENT

One has to be dumb to believe that a particular bracket type can ensure fast treatment in Orthodontics. Those who believe so and propagate the concept have fallen prey to the marketing acumen of smart sales men. And proving themselves to be dumb enough to believe a sales man who is not a technical person. On exhibit also is the quality of their education.

There is no alternative to finely developed skills in Orthodontics.

This remark was made in exasperation by one the members of the executive committee of the IOS (Davangere) 2012-2013 . SATYAMEV JAYATE. Truth is difficult to hide and has a unique way of surfacing. How the author managed to survive his place in the Executive Committee is million dollar question. It was very embarassing to the Organization registered in Davangere. Does that make it a rouge organization ?

BEST TEACHER INDEED

Can this be voted by students from the BDS class from all over India? It is well known that hardly any orthodontics is taught at the graduate level. Incidentally the awardees look the other way when it comes to taking up the matter of plagiarism by a senior member. So what is the big hulla balloo about the best teacher?
