WILL THE REAL IOS PLEASE STAND UP AND BE COUNTED

The person who shortened the name of the Indian Orthodontic Society (claiming to represent the orthodontic profession in India) to just three alphabets i.e. IOS deserves all the rewards that we can think of. It was a master stroke indeed. Just imagine only three alphabets IOS can represent the entire spectrum of the membership. What an idea!!!

The ensuing exercise is critical and laden with satire.

INTERESTINGLY THE IOS IS REGISTERED WITH TWO GOVERNMENT BODIES. ONE IN TAMIL NADU AND THE OTHER IN KARNATAKA. THERE IS PERPETUAL CONFUSION REGARDING THE REGISTRATION. SEEMS LIKE THE MEMEBRS OF THE TWO STATES ARE DESTINED TO SLUG IT OUT FOR CONTROL IN THE NEAR FUTURE. BOTH STATES HAVE MASS PRODUCED ORTHODONTISTS. BOTH CLAIM BETTER QUALITY.HAPPY HUNTING !!!

The S in the IOS represents the various types of members that make up the organization

So let's take a critical view of THE S. IT COULD MEAN ANYTHING.GIVING WINGS TO IMAGINATION HERE WE GO.

INDIAN ORTHODONTIC SIR : The lords and masters of the profession who control it by remote through the hordes of students that they have passed. The quality of education is of course suspect. They are universally accused of not teaching enough Orthodontics at the BDS level, reserving all their knowledge for the masters program. Their word is the gospel truth. They are so intelligent that they can switch to newer techniques in no time at all. Having spent a life time doing Begg's, most converted to Preadjusted Edgewise in just two days. Most have even taken to teaching Preadjusted edgewise to the MDS students. They feel that they own everything in Orthodontics and nothing should happen without their consent. Very touchy about anyone, but themselves, teaching orthodontics. Professors are there in plenty. This has nothing to do with their academic acumen. They are only fulfilling the requirement of a promoter of a dental college. Graduate at 24 and professor at 32 is the way it goes. Vision and maturity are alien words. The power to bully is the only criteria. Immune to all rules of decent conduct. The powerful (read with large fan following ) can get away with open plagiarism. Most have cheated on their experience certificates, having lent their names to college for the purpose of on paper staff requirements. AND LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST PLEASE DO NOT EXPECT ANYTHING NEW FROM THEM IN THE FIELD OF ORTHODONTICS. THEY ARE PART TIME TEACHERS.TOO BUSY WITH THEIR PRACTICES AND THEIR POLITICS.

Can insure the success or failure of a student convention or CDE program by forcing their students to attend or denying them permission to attend the same. Of course, free air tickets and free stay in hotels have to be provided as a kick back.

Power has gone to their head and they are in no position to accept the truth. When cornered they order the expulsion of members not suited to their larger designs. Capable of rewriting the English dictionary eg truth means slander.

Of late everyone is trying to bag the best teacher award for which they are prepared to KEEP QUITE AND LOOK THE OTHER WAY.

INDIAN ORTHODONTIC STUDENT : The student is the main fodder for the power of the sirs. These are the guys who are forced into membership for misuse by the power hungry. The unsuspecting student pays up and joins in the hope that he is entering the greatest community. In the years that ensue the truth dawns that a great mistake has been made. Given a choice not many would join the membership. Earlier there was a first step wherein the student joined as a student member and later, on completion of the course, would opt for a full membership. The present scenario gives no chance to the student to make a choice. To be used at election time as a vote bank. And as reluctant / forced participant at courses organized by some Professors. They are beginning to ask awkward questions such as “why dose'nt our teacher teach the topic to be covered at the course? After all we have already paid through our nose?”

• I O SUPERBRAT : The guys with inadequate brains to enter the profession on merit. They generally buy their way into the profession , and feel they own the profession because they have paid huge sums of unreasonable money to enter. The color of their money is BLACK as coal and could have come from any crime as varied as kidnapping to trafficking in new born babies. Their aim is to climb into a position where they can earn back their investment. Good Orthodontics is the last on their agenda, Unfortunately their breed is increasing by the day. Generally in a big hurry to occupy some position in the organization to justify the families expenditure. Some also bought their way through BDS . Only means they never had the brains / aptitude to be either Dentist or Orthodontist. The IO Sirs love them. The favorite student of the big boss ( usually the dunce/ better identified as an idiot) who will do anything for the boss without thinking or questioning. A perfect person to plant in the system for the purpose of wrong doings.
• I O SODOMIZED : This is how a new comer feels when he enters the profession as a practitioner. Imagine having to pay upto 50 % for just a reference. Or, having to face the insult of visiting the clinics of less qualified individuals for work. Can't get more insulting than this can it ? This is how the profession is practiced . The first choice of a conference gift is a visiting bag. It's been getting smaller as the new comers do not carry welders. Of course, the sirs have no answer. They feel all screwed up but won't admit. The sodomized will be seen blabbering about the fictitious amount of money they make in practice. The truth is too bitter to admit.
• I O SUPERCOP : These are the guys who imagine situations where none exist. They propose endless amendments to the constitution with the sole purpose of holding on to power through thick and thin, regardless of the consequences to the health of the profession. These are the guys first off the block on a signal from their handlers. They will write demanding expulsion of members from the Society on baseless trumped up charges, without understanding a word of what they are writing. All this, with the sole intention of pleasing the controllers of the vote banks. The objective is to get elected to the Executive committee. This activity is maximum when an election looms on the horizon.
• IO SCOUNDREL : This is the guy who is loved by the vote bank managers specially at the AGM. A couple of drinks is all that it takes to get him going. The vote bank managers have a special quality to be able to identify this great guy for shouting at the opposition. Generally, from the IO Superbrat category.
• IO SUPERMAN : These are the guys in a great hurry . They consider that the profession was just waiting for them to come and make the great change. Modus operandi is to become a sycophant of a vote bank manager and curry favor. Difficult to identify. They are slimy, smile too much and do not wear their under wear over their pants as Superman does in the comic books. Usually come from well moneyed families and are in a hurry to justify the unreasonably large amount of money spent on them for an education which is not giving the desired returns. Very active trying to get elected to a position and then doing nothing at all.
• I O SLAVE : Extensive research has proved beyond all reasonable doubt that the whole Orthodontic profession in India could be categorized as slaves. Yes, slaves to the teachers(specially so in private dental colleges) and then to the general dental practitioner who is known to control the profession.
• I O SUCKER : Forever ready to take a course by a foreigner or one of the high flying locals. Never happy or confident with the knowledge they possess. Always on unsure ground. Forever looking for the easy way out and paying importance to the wrong guys. Proving beyond doubt that they have had very poor education.
